Bloomberg New Energy Finance said that jatropha-based fuels were the near-term candidate as sustainable aviation fuels available at prices competitive with conventional jet fuel.

Following the emergence of jatropha-based fuels, Bloomberg New Energy Finance said that aviation fuel made from pyrolysis of woody biomass represented the next most affordable category of aviation biofuels.

BNEF also said that large-scale, biofuel-producing algae farms will not appear this decade, and that aviation biofuels based on pal, soybeans or canola may never become fully competitive.

President Barack Obama - U.S. Military to Invest $510 million in Biofuels

With personnel nearly the population of Chicago and a fleet of over 500,000 aircrafts, vessels, and vehicles, the U.S. Department of Defence is a massive and energy-hungry institution

The Obama administration recently announced to invest $510 million in biofuel production over three years.

As an example of just how valuable the U.S. biofuel market will be, the Navy alone estimates it will require a staggering 336 million gallons of biofuel annually by 2020. The division currently uses less than 300,000 gallons.

The Air Force is calling for 50 percent of its domestic aviation needs to be satisfied with biofuels by 2016. The Navys plans are similar, with a 50 percent alternative energy mix by 2020.

Bloomberg - Maize rallies 8.3% since January 18th 2012 on CTOB

The commodity has rallied 8.3 percent from this years lowest closing price on Jan. 18.

Corn futures for March delivery rose 0.25 cent to close at $6.425 a bushel at 1:15 p.m. on the Chicago Board of Trade.

Corn is the biggest U.S. crop, valued at $66.7 billion in 2010, followed by soybeans at $38.9 billion, USDA data show.

The quiet revolution is already well begun in the biofuel industry as it enters its high-growth stage and it is only going to get better from here.

Quite unlike fossil-fuels, which cause a huge net gain to our atmosphere, the CO2 equation couldn't be better for plant based diesel.

China recently set aside an area the size of England to produce jatropha and other non-food plants for biodiesel. India has up to 60 million hectares of non-arable land available to produce jatropha, and intends to replace 20 per cent of diesel fuels with Jatropha based biodiesel.

2012 is the year for investing in Agriculture - ETF Radar

Each New Year brings with it a number of questions for investors: Am I investing in the right place? Should I be taking more or less of a risk? Should I have a more diverse portfolio? Those in doubt should not panic, but take time to assess ETF sectors they may not have previously considered.

Fifty years ago, when the world's population was around half what it is now, the answer to looming famines was the green revolution, a massive increase in the use of hybrid seeds and chemical fertilisers. It worked, but at a great ecological price. We grow nearly twice as much food as we did just a generation ago, but we use three times as much water from rivers and underground supplies.

Forbes - Lufthansa To Fly First Commercial Transatlantic Flight Powered By Biofuel

Forget about buying carbon credits as absolution for warming the globe as you globe trot and instead purchase a ticket on the first commercial transatlantic flight powered by biofuels.

Also in November, China launched its first biofuel test flight when a 747-400 circled Beijing powered by a jatropha-based biofuel manufactured by Honeywell.

Lufthansa Press Release - Practical trial of biosynthetic fuel at airline successful

After a six-month practical trial involving biosynthetic fuel, Lufthansa is pleased to announce the first positive results. In all, 1,187 biofuel flights were operated between Hamburg and Frankfurt. According to initial calculations, CO2 emissions were reduced by 1,471 tonnes. Total consumption of the biokerosene mix amounted to 1,556 tonnes. 

From 15 July to 27 December 2011 a Lufthansa Airbus A321 was used to operate scheduled flights on the Hamburg-Frankfurt route. One of the aircrafts engines was powered by a 50-50 blend of regular fuel and biosynthetic kerosene.

The highlight of the biofuel trial at Lufthansa will be the first scheduled transatlantic flight to the United States, which is now planned for 12 January 2012.

AgriMoney - Corn prices - Can they outperform again in 2012?

Rabobank expect corn prices to rally from current spot prices into the second quarter of 2012.

Standard Chartered expect corn prices to lead the grains market higher in the first half of 2012 as inventories are drawn down and market sentiment improves.

Overall, this gives a picture which shows higher profitability for corn in 2012.

New Bloomberg data shows worldwide funding of green energy projects rose by 5% last year.

Global investment in clean energy reached a new high of 260bn US dollars last year – despite the financial crisis and the anti-environment agenda of Republicans in the US Congress, a United Nations investors summit was told on Thursday.

The analysis was presented to 500 global investors meeting at the UN to try to mobilise the large-scale funds needed to address climate change. The $260bn figure includes investment in renewables, biofuels and smart technologies. It does not include natural gas, nuclear energy or clean coal.

Kevin Parker, global head of Deutsche Asset Management, said Investors really have no excuse any longer for dealing with climate risk because it's going mainstream.

Since 2005, Togos political transformation has been key in stimulating its once moribund economy. GDP growth has been the main beneficiary. Previously flat, it has risen from 2.8 percent in 2008 to over 4 percent forecast for next year.

At $3.1bn Togos economy remains small relative to some of its peers in the West African sub-region. Bloomberg - China Record Corn Crop Still Failing To Meet Demand

China reaped its seventh record corn crop in eight years in the harvest now ending. That still wont be enough to meet demand, driving a fivefold gain in imports as prices head for the highest-ever annual average.

Maize is an amazing crop, but demand is just too strong  said Dan Cekander, the director of research at Newedge USA LLC in Chicago.

Corn futures on the Chicago Board of Trade have gained 3.9 percent to $6.535 a bushel this year and averaged $6.90, heading for the highest-ever annual figure. The grain will probably reach $7.25 in the first quarter, Cekander said.

Chinese demand rose 50 percent since 2000 as output gained 38 percent, USDA data show. Only the U.S. grows and uses more. China, which became a net importer for the first time in 14 years in 2010, is entering a golden age for consumption, Morgan Stanley analysts have said.

By the 2020s, the world's population is expected to pass eight billion. By the 2040s, it will top nine billion. That's like adding two Chinas between now and the middle of the century, as Robert L. Thompson of the Chicago Council on Global Affairs put it recently.

The greatest challenge of our time will be to figure out how we're going to put food in all of these mouths. Over the next four decades, farmers everywhere will have to boost their production by a total of 70%.

The worlds 7,000 airlines could switch to low-carbon jet fuels much faster than other transport because aeroplanes have very few filling stations, says Richard Branson.

In the next five years, according to the website published by business NGO Carbon War Room and academic publisher Elsevier, some renewable jet fuel companies could be producing enough renewable fuel to replace 10-20% of the fuel of a typical mid-sized airline.

We are heading in the right direction. The industry could go from one of the dirtiest to one of the cleanest in 10 years. We are investing in different companies and really beginning to see traction.

Biofuels are being phased in as blends, with 50/50 biofuel/fossil mixes. Moreover, biofuels can grow anywhere, even in arid places like the Gulf. For example, Jatropha is another source of biofuel that generates 30-40 per cent of its mass in oil that can be used for biofuels.

Whereas fossil fuels are consumed and not replaced, biofuels offer something novel. We can replace them even as we consume them. Since biofuels come from plant matter, production also consumes carbon dioxide.

By using a biomass fuel source, airlines are able to move into a world where they can depend on a consistent supply and more stable prices.

Air China conducted its 6th trial flight of a passenger plane powered by a 50:50 mix of biofuel and traditional aviation fuel.

The fuel, based on the oily nuts of the jatropha tree, is one of a series of research projects launched last year by the United States and China, the worlds two biggest oil consumers. The two governments say they want the research to reduce pollution and spur the growth of new industries.

Bloomberg - The U.S. Air Force to get half its fuel from alternative sources by 2016

The Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marines have ambitious plans to wean themselves from oil and gas and trim the $14.5 billion they pay for fuel every year. Reliance on fossil fuels is simply too much of a vulnerability for a military organization to have, says U.S. Navy Secretary Raymond Mabus.

The U.S. Air Force is on track to certify its 40-plus aircraft models to burn fuels derived from waste oils and plants by 2013.

President Barack Obama in August announced that the Navy and other government agencies would plow $510 million into the commercial development of biofuels by 2014. The Navy expects to ramp up its biofuel use to 3 million gallons in 2016 from 900,000 gallons next year.

Air China Completes Biofuel Testing on Jatropha

The Air China Boeing 747 landed safely at Beijing airport after it burned more than 10 tons of biofuel, and after the test, Zhang Hongying, an official with the Civil Aviation Administration of China, said the fuel was now ready to be used for commercial flights.
Biofuel used in the flight was produced from Jatropha and the company is expected to supply 60,000 tons of the fuel annually by 2014.

Pike Research - Global Biofuels Market Value to Double by 2021

Motivated by growing concerns related to energy security, climate change, and economic stagnation, at least 38 national governments throughout the world have enacted blending mandates or targets to accelerate the expansion of biofuels production and consumption in the transportation sector.

According to a new report from Pike Research, the increased production and consumption of biofuels will more than double the industry's market value in the next decade. The cleantech market intelligence firm forecasts that the global market for biofuels will increase from $82.7 billion in 2011 to $185.3 billion by 2021.

Having conducted several trials over the past three years, the airline industry is shifting into a new gear, starting to conduct regular commercial flights that rely in part on biofuels.

New York Times - Airlines Weigh the Advantages of Using More Biofuel

The worlds airlines will carry 2.8 billion passengers and 46 million tons of freight this year. They will burn somewhere between 210 million and 220 million tons of fuel and generate 650 million tons of carbon emissions in the process.

Crucially, the industry is looking at developing aviation fuel not from palm oil and other so-called first-generation crops, but from plants like jatropha, an inedible weed that can grow in arid conditions, or from algae, which likewise do not encroach on arable land.

SG Biofuels announced it has teamed with the Inter-American Development Bank, Air BP and TAM Airlines, to accelerate the production of crude Jatropha oil as a source for aviation bio jet fuel on 75,000 acres in Brazil.

Jatropha has proven to be the most cost-effective and sustainable feedstock for renewable jet fuel but the challenge lies in scaling production to meet the demand, said Paul Nash, head of new energies at Airbus.

With the ongoing volatility in oil prices driving up the cost of energy, Jatropha is not only a highly sustainable alternative, but provides a stable, cost-effective source of fuel, said Paulus Figueredo, Energy Manager for TAM Airlines.

Jatropha fuelling aviation's green revolution

The aviation industry has set ambitious targets to green its industry. The industry is striving towards carbon neutral growth by 2020.

Since 1990, the aviation industry has improved fuel efficiency by about 80 per cent through technological improvements, an equivalent of 3.3 billion tonnes of carbon dioxide saved. The next big opportunities for improvement, according to IATA, are better air traffic management and biofuels.

One of the primary biofuel feedstocks is jatropha oil. The jatropha tree, with its cashew-sized nut, is known as one of highest yielding oilseed plants in world.

German airline Lufthansa purchase further Crude Jatropha Oil

ASTM International's approval for the blending of up to 50% of biofuel with conventional jet fuel earlier this year has resulted in a high demand for bio-jet fuel from airlines.

Lufthansa purchased 200 tonnes of the jatropha oil for $1,000 (€710) per tonne.

A 50/50 blend of bio-jet fuel will be used in one Airbus 321. The trial is expected to reduce CO2 emissions by up to 1,500 tonnes.

'We can't produce enough jatropha oil at the moment to meet demand,' says CEO of Jatenergy, Phil Hodgson.

In a world concerned about global warming and emissions of greenhouse gases biofuels reduce carbon emissions by jet aircraft by up to 80 percent. Biofuels are clean, green, and for the moment, expensive.

Financial Times - Jatropha ready for take off?

Until not long ago it was hailed "the miracle crop", blessed with unlimited potential for an energy-thirsty world. Jatropha, a biofuel crop loved for its ability to grow in areas not suitable for food, is native to Central America and seemed like a blessing for hot and dry places with high poverty levels.

Lufthansa begins world's first regular biofuel passenger flights

Lufthansa is today launching a six-month biofuel trial on regular scheduled flights. A Lufthansa Airbus A321 with the registration D-AIDG will fly the Hamburg-Frankfurt-Hamburg route four times daily. One of its engines will run on a 50/50 mix of regular fuel and biosynthetic kerosene.

The biosynthetic kerosene used by Lufthansa is derived from pure biomass (biomass to liquids - BtL) and consists of jatropha, camelina and animal fats.

By 2030 plant-derived formulas could make up as much as 30 percent of the aviation fuel market

Airbus which together with Boeing makes about 80 percent of the world's passenger planes, estimates that by 2030 plant-derived formulas could make up as much as 30 percent of the aviation fuel market.

The challenge now is building fuel production facilities fast enough to meet demand, and that may take at least three more years, says James Rekoske, vice-president of renewable energy at Honeywell's UOP unit.
